The machine is a skid steer running a forestry mulcher head — a drum of carbide teeth that takes standing brush and small trees down and grinds them into chips in one motion. There's no separate cut, pile, burn and haul cycle, which is exactly why mulching costs less and finishes faster than old-school clearing on the right property. What stood in the way in the morning is a layer of mulch on the ground by the afternoon.
Because the work happens above the soil, the ground itself stays put. Roots hold the sand in place, there's no torn-up dirt waiting on the next thunderstorm to wash it out, and the finished surface is clean enough to mow around. For most overgrown properties around here — brush, titi, yaupon, wax myrtle, smilax vines, volunteer pines — mulching is the right tool, and we'll tell you straight when it isn't.
A dozer clears land by main force — everything goes, including the topsoil structure, and you're left with bare sand, push piles and ruts. That's the right call when a pad is getting built.
